The Turtleneck.

Thursday, December 18, 2014

What are your feelings on turtlenecks?  I used to loathe them.  Like hate with a capitol H.  I would leave the house wearing one, and by the time I got to drop off I would be pulling at my neck like I was being strangled.  I don't know, I just found them to be so suffocating, and even the thought of having something skin tight around my neck made me claustrophobic.

A few weeks back I saw a girl wearing this vest/ turtleneck hybrid over a flannel shirt, and I picked one up for myself.  Ever since, I have been wearing it every.single.day.  Seriously.  Over gym clothes, over sweaters, over other turtlenecks, and even for a recent girls night out, over a button down with leather pants.  I swear, on these colder days, I almost feel naked without something on my neck now.  As much as I try to remember, I always seem to leave my scarfs at home, and I've been really enjoying not freezing all day long (novel concept I know.)  Of course, I'm now obsessed and have been scouring sales on the net to add to my modest collection.  Below are a few of my favorites.

Am I crazy, are turtlenecks really just so chic, or I have I finally been brainwashed by the crazy New England Winters?

P.S. Bonus points will always go for the girl with the hair tucked IN to the turtleneck.

P.P.S. Same goes for a necklace over, see second to the last image.

All Dressed Up.

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

I feel like lately I've been stuck in a bit of a fashion rut.  It probably has more to do with the changing of the seasons, or in this case the lack thereof (is it Summer, is it Winter, is it Fall???) but my uniform of boots/ sneakers, sweater/ blazer and tee, and skinny jeans has gotten a little tiring.  Actually, this post pretty much sums up my current thought process, perfectly, and I have to say it's nice I'm not alone in feeling this way.  Now, don't take this the wrong way, I am most definitely not turning my back on the idea in investing in a few simple pieces that can be worn year after year, but even I have to admit, sometimes it's fun to mix things up a bit.  I think my current fashion strife was triggered by the fact that recently I've been having quite a few nights out, for events for the boy's schools, and for the first time I've been finding myself saying, "I have nothing to wear," which obviously isn't the case, but the 'ol uniform of a black blazer, black pants, and silk top, has definitely grown a little old.

Recently, however, I stumbled upon this great site, Reformation, which seems to specialize in dresses that while not exactly cheap, aren't budget busters either.  While perusing, I realized that what I'm missing from my wardrobe is a few great dresses!  Ones that can be worn in the summer with sandals and flats, but can also be worn with tights and booties in the cooler months (which is good, because I think these are definitely on the shorter side if you are taller.)  I'm also attracted to the ease of wearing dresses, which like a jumpsuit, is a one stop shop for what to wear and makes getting ready a breeze.

I know, wearing a dress isn't exactly a novel idea, but for me, having embraced the whole "tomboy chic" look so aggressively over the last few years, owning a few flirty dresses will definitely help me with my current wardrobe conundrum without stepping too far out of my comfort zone (meaning I can still wear my trusty blazer over them.)  Here are a few of my favorite dresses from the site, which I can't believe I never heard of before, and you can view the whole line here (which is not just limited to dresses.)

Okay, now I'll be all dressed up... I guess I just need somewhere to go!!!

Mad for Plaid.

Monday, September 8, 2014

I'm not what you would call a die hard "trend follower." Rather I tend to invest in more long term basic pieces when shopping, versus the "this is so hot right now" mentality.  However, like most people, each season I find myself longing for a bit of a refresh, and it's hard not to notice the two "trends" that seem to be showing up in every September issue landing in my mailbox; lots of plaid, piled high with gold jewelry.  Year after year, I consider a flannel shirt to be a staple in my winter wardrobe, so clearly this is one trend I will be adopting this coming fall. Glamming it up with some heavy (faux) gold jewelry... well, that is just the icing on the cake for me. Even better, a plaid shirt, with a different patterned plaid scarf in the same color scheme? Really, did you even have to ask?

Here is a little plaid inspiration from the professionals...

... and what is sure to be my fall uniform.

P.S. If you are in search of a great flannel, I am a huge fan of Madewell's selection! xx

Cleaning Out My Closet.

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

There is little I love more in life than a good purge.  Around this time, every year, I methodically go through every closet in our house, trashing or donating everything that has gone unused or unworn.  I usually save the best for last, that being my own closet.  Like clockwork, my sister will come to stay with us, one rainy day in April, and together we will take out every piece, one by one.  I will think about the last time I wore it, question whether it will happen anytime in the near future, and then toss it to her happily awaiting arms (where she quickly stuffs it in a shopping bag before I can change my mind.)  You'd think that having a few bags of clothing leave my life, would leave me wanting more, but in fact I find it to be just the opposite; a more edited closet/ life makes me long for less.  Less clutter, less noise, fewer choices.  For the few months after my purge, getting dressed every day is such a breeze, and I find myself feeling more confident because I know that I am loving what I'm wearing.  Trust me, that goes a long way, in a long day.

When decluttering, I have a few personal "rules" for my closet.

  1. Always, always, always use wood hangers.  If your closet looks like a store, you will be a lot less likely to go in one.  Target sells my favorite for $1 each, but Ikea also has some great ones that I think come out to about .30 cents.
  2. Don't separate in seasons, but rather by color.  By storing things away, you are less likely to wear them throughout the year.  Besides, most things, with/ or without layers can be worn year round.
  3. I separate by color, so I can see what I absolutely do NOT need.  From this picture it's obvious, I should be dragged in the street and shot if I buy 1) another cream/ white blouse, 2) black blazer, 3) pair of jeans, and 4) patterned blouse.
  4. I like to keep shoes in their original boxes, it keeps them from getting dusty, and always makes them feel "new."
  5. This is probably pretty obvious, but I keep pants with pants, jackets with jackets, sweaters with sweaters... again, just to make sure I know what I DON'T need, which always comes in handy when you find the sale of the century, on something that is similar to what you already have.  Walk away, just walk away.
  6. Shelves, storage, more shelves.  The container store has some great setups, if you can't/ don't have built-ins.  It gives you so much more space, and allows for your clothes to be treated more gently, which means they will last longer.
  7. If you can, find a loved one to give your "on the fence" items to.  A sister, baby sitter, neighbor. I find that I am much more likely to let something go, if I know it will go to a good home.  I always think how much better it is for my sister to have something she will wear 60 times a year, than for me to keep it and maybe wear it once or twice.  Plus, you know you can always get it back if you are desperately missing something.  This I may have done once or twice.
With those rules in mind, this is the current state of my closet. I hope she can stay like this until fall! (Yes, she's her own person ;)

That my friends, is cleaning out your closet!

The Best T's and Tanks; a Roundup.

Tuesday, March 4, 2014

A few Summers ago, when the Little Man wasn't even a year old, and I was pregnant, we had to live in a hotel room (with my sister in tow) while waiting for the occupancy permit for our current home. Our life was in complete and total disarray, and the 4 of us were pretty much living out of a backpack for about three weeks. Given our lack of clothing options, and my growing waistband, one day we picked up a family size pack of white, men's, Hanes v-necks, and from that day on, that is pretty much all I wore for the rest of the Summer. It was my version of laid back chic, emphasis on the laid back. Now, while I'm still a fan of the classic, at this point in my life I prefer for my daily fashion to be just slightly elevated. Slightly. Nothing is better than that "perfect" T/ tank, but finding said item isn't always as easy as you would think. You want something soft, but not too soft that it get holes after one wash. Thin, but not see thru. Long, but not to long. You guys know what I'm talking about. I feel like thee basics are just things you find through trial and error, and I hate to say it, but I've had more than my share of errors. Not anymore! These 5 T's and tanks are the best I've found, and the ones I find myself restocking, year after year.
