Craptastic or Fabtastic????

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

I think I have made it pretty clear around here that there is NOTHING that freaks me out more than clutter. Seriously, just the thought of it makes me want to clean out a closet or something. As far as I'm concerned anything that you can buy on QVC or HSN, for me, definitely falls into that category. I mean, if the invention is that amazing/ revolutionary/ necessary...etc than wouldn't it be on every store shelf, in every part of the country? Wouldn't it have been one of Oprah''s favorite things? Wouldn't I have at least heard of it prior to turning on the TV at 1 am? You know I'm right here, hoarders of America.

You do see where this is going... don't you?

So, the other day I was leafing through the new In Style and I came across something that just HAS to be to good to be true. Behold the yonanas. *btw who comes up with these names, I totally want that job????

It's basically a frozen yogurt maker but with one AMAZING twist, it takes frozen fruit, and only fruit, and turns it into a creamy frozen snack, all in under a minute. For this dairy intolerant girl, I have to say I'm intrigued. Very intrigued. I also can't imagine a better way to get kids to eat their necessary servings of fruits and veggies... hello, desert anyone??? The thing seems to be incredibly genius.

The catch is that it's one of those "as seen on TV products" and while I would be willing to shell out the 50 bucks to see if this thing works, I am not willing to have it sit on my counter for the next 10 years collecting dust, if it doesn't.

So, I have to ask, is this thing craptastic or fabtastic? The infomercial can be seen here (words I never thought I would say on this blog ) and if I decide to bite the bullet and try this baby out, I'll definitely let you know the results.

Oh yonanas... you had me at diary free.

Anyone out there seen one of these in real life?

I will admit I fall prey to the lure of the infomercial. I never actually buy anything, but I always get sucked in! I can assure you that you do not need the Yonana, however. Put frozen sliced banana and any other fruit (or chocolate...) into the food processor. Let it whirl far longer than you think it should have to, scraping down the sides every so often. The result - creamy non-dairy, nonfat fruit soft serve.

Ann... cut to me freezing every piece of fruit we have in the house, and dusting off the food processor.

Thanks for the tip!!!!

I'm loving this food processor tip. I may have to try that out. Of course this machine is not necessary..but it could be fun. However if the food processor trick works you must report back. :)

I make yonana every day with my vitamix. i use that vitamix so often, that it has more than paid for its hefty price tag - soups, desserts, sauces, you name it. but it is fantastic for frozen bananas. lately i have been putting the bananas and some pb2 and making divine peanut butter banana "ice cream".

I too use the Vitamix every single day! Frozen bananas, a little bit of vanilla almond milk, a spoonful of nutella. YUM frozen nutella yonana.

I can vouch for the success with a food processor and frozen fruit as well. You definitely don't need to clutter anything up with this product.

And yes, whirling takes a lot longer than you would think necessary, but oh so worth it - tiny tip: add a tiny pinch of salt to get things "melt-y" faster.

Chiming in with another vote for the frozen fruit and food processor. If I add a little of my kids milk to some frozen peaches it makes what he thinks is "Sherbert" and gives him some calcium at the same time. Total win/win.

A few years ago a friend brought one to MOPs that is a commerical grade one. I have wanted it since seeing her's but couldn't fork out the $500 for one. I'm curious now when they will start selling this at Walmart, lol.

Okay, I actually HAVE a Yonanas...just got it. And I, like many of you, have tried using a food processor/blender, etc to make fruit ice cream. And you can get kind of close, kind of... BUT the Yonanas is FABULOUS! Seriously folks, it rocks. It's so easy and there's no scrapping down the sides of anything. You just stick frozen fruit in and it makes the most delish ice cream you have ever tasted. Last night I made some with papaya, mango, strawberries (mostly) and bananas. It was heaven on earth. I actually had a quick thought of being "bad" when I was eating it...but then I remembered it was fruit, and nothing but. Seriously the consistency this thing makes is perfect....way better than any other appliance I have ever tried for this purpose. It's easy to clean and totally worth the investment (which is pretty cheap, actually.) And my kids LOVE it! I drizzled a little natural peanut butter over top and they thought they were the luckiest kids on earth when I told them they could have it for breakfast.
Anyway, just my two cents....but we LOVE this product at my house!!! Seriously, it is amazing!

Lucky me, I found an unused Yonana contraption in a thrift shop for $10, and WOW, it really pleases me. I used to masticate bananas in the Champion juicer way back when, but it was way too much work cleaning it. Yeah, I've done it in the Vitamix too, but again, way too much work. This thing is instant and mostly dishwasher safe and the texture is divine.

I totally agree with Stef & Janet Ann - Yonanas is fantastic......... definitely the best "dust collector" I have ever bought.
