How Long Is Too Long?

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

Growing up I was always under the assumption that "older" women had to have their hair a certain length. Of course, at the time, "older" to me was anything over the age of 30, and now that I am firmly in my thirties (okay, I'm 31) I find myself lusting after some seriously long locks.  As in L.U.S.T.I.N.G. I have been growing my hair out for about two years now, and I am at the point where I either need to go for it, or accept that maybe I am just too old mature for the hair of my dreams. I'm not quite sure where I got the idea that women of a certain age had to have their hair a certain length, but I think it must have come from my father (then again I easily could have just made this idea up in my head) but I began to think differently about this whole hair thing when I became friends with two of the yummiest mummies that I've ever seen, who even in their mid-thirties have amazingly, beautiful long hair that still looks completely age appropriate. Basically, this is just a long way of me saying that I think I'm going to go for it. I mean, why not. If 50 is the new 40, and 40 is the new 30, than isn't 31 the new 21? (I'll take the hair, and leave the long nights at the bars, thank you very much.)

How long am I thinking you ask? Well that very question was answered for me by the newest J.Crew* catalog (you've just got to love their incredible styling.)

What do we think? Can a woman in her 30's pull this off?

I guess I'm about to find out.

*Speaking of J.Crew I just picked up this, and this, which happen to combine my two favorite things, stripes and sequins. Yes, you had me at hello.

Please, you're BARELY in your 30s. Women of a certain age refers to someone 50+. I think you're safe with long hair (or any length hair) for quite a long time to come.

You will have to share how you are keeping it healthy and blond at the same time. I have been using a reconstructor some days plus nioxin scalp treatment and conditioner on other days. I am serious about my hair since I chopped it all off two years ago.

Loving the long luscious locks! i'm boycotting my stylist at the moment because everytime i go in for a highlight touch up, I seem to walk out with seemingly shorter hair. no more!!

i dont think its about age, i think its about face and personality. I think you need to grow it and as it grows you will know - do you like it or not, doe sit fit or not.

Looking good is always age appropriate

I will never cut my hair once I get it to my dream length. And it is long now. I want it past my boobs in the front. And then I will never cut it again. So many women have long hair in their 30s and 40s... Demi Moore. Charlotte Gainsbourg. Elle MacPherson. Grace Coddington. I could go on and on.

Of course you can pull it off, at 31 you are still a baby! I am 47 and had three inches cut off mine the other month because it was too long and it still sits below my shoulders, I won't be going for a Bob until at least 55!

I agree with Looking Fab. I'm over 40 too and I like my hair long. It needs more care, I know, but I'd look terrible in a bob...So just have your hair as you like it...Ciao. A.

I agree with April Elizabeth - I think long hair has much less to do with age and more with whether it looks good on the person. If it is flattering and healthy, I say go for it as long as you want!

Hi - this is indeed a dilemma. I do think it really hits home by mid-30s - I know a commenter says 50 but for some, even after 30 tragically, things start to fade a little :-(

I think judging by the pics you have posted that you can completely stick with long hair. It suits you and you have the style to carry it off. For me, I work part time so I need my hair to look smart enough, so that dictates that I keep it pretty tidy even if long. There is a limit though - when I know it's just too long for my age - I'm 36. Ah well.... Lou x

Do it, do it, DO IT! I love long hair too but always get impatient growing it out. For some reason my perfect length would be "to my boobs". Don't know why, but I love the way hair looks when it sits just on the boobs. If only I had the patience to get it that long... I remember a few years back wanting hair like Shakira's, lol.

Oh yes! You are only 31! If I had thicker hair, I would have it to my shoulders. I'm 51.

You can totally pull it off! Go for it!

Okay, I'm totally sold! I'll keep you updated on how long I can get it! You all just have to promise to tell me if i look too young!!!

Go for it! I say the cutoff is when you look 50 (or when it's all grey?). Either way I'll be 32 in a few months and my hair is down to my bum ;)

Most definitely stay long Yum - you can so pull it off and 31 is nothing. SJP and Elle Macpherson are well into their 40'sand they look amazing with long hair. Cutting it off in your 30's is one of those fashion myths that has become outdated. Keep growing! xxx
